I’m not going to count this as one of my actual blog posts, but I would just like something clarified a bit. What is the deal with looting? I think I understand that it involves going to stores in mass chaos and taking anything you want from them (this is my understanding from the media’s portrayal, which I understand is most likely pretty skewed). I am just interested to know more about the connection between this and the Ferguson case. Does it have anything to do with race? I must admit, I was a bit confused by Dr. Kate’s question at the end of class today. What is the connection between boycotting and looting? Are they the same thing? What’s the deal? I figured this was the best place to ask a question like this, because I am always interested and curious to see what my classmates (and others) think about this.
Any help understanding this would be very helpful. Thanks!

I think I was confused at the question as well because I always thought of boycotting as abstaining from dealing with or using a particular thing or service as a form of protest. For looting I think of people going to stores just taking and damaging things. I think to my understandings the actions are different but it’s more of a form of protest for both. I didn’t and still in a way don’t agree with the looting in Ferguson but I think the reason is because the citizens don’t feel like things such as marches or petitions are making a big enough impact on the message that they are trying to convey. I guess in comparison it is better to destroy local stores than to go and kill anyone who made them mad, or in this instance, for the group of people who were looting to go and direct their anger to Darren Wilson because I’m sure he and his entire family would be dead. The sad thing about the way we live and respond in America is that people respond ALOT quicker to violence than they do to peace. I wouldn’t consider looting a race thing at all because black and white people can loot for different reasons but like you said the media is portraying it a certain way implying that its a black thing. I personally don’t think looting is the best option but I’m assuming a lot more people are aware of what is going on and are taken more seriously in Ferguson because of it.
Both looting and boycotting cripple businesses. I see the main difference as being that looting violently cripples businesses overnight while boycotting peacefully cripples businesses over a longer span of time.
