Body Language

Body language is something we haven’t really talk about during class, I want to talk about it a little because it also related to our body. It is important because it is part of our communication and we all see it in our daily life. Body language is one of the big nonverbal communication that we make. It is considered as an universal language and it shapes who you really are as well. Body language is all non-verbal communication we make, when we want/try to make some good impression, we will automate smiles and hold eye contacts with others, it just a natural way that we all adapted to. However, there is also so unconscious signals we send out through our body language that others may see it and understand instantly.

Anyway, I just thought that it is very interesting and powerful because it is not what you say, it is more about how you are wanting to say or express your thinking and ideas.

  1. It’s interesting you bring this up because I realized how important it is to our lives. I realize this in myself and my closest friends and relatives notice my habitual body language that it kind of annoys me they point it out. I personally have to deal with anxiety and depression all due to my self-image issues. I realize when I meet someone and I begin to feel anxious I tend to have issues at looking at people in the eyes. I also do this thing with my hair, tuck it behind my ear all nervously. It’s probably one of things I am more self conscious about because I feel like I am being observed for every little detail of my body language. Like do people know I have anxiety or what?

  2. I think its interesting to note too that body language will change across cultures. Likewise the way people interpret body language and expressions will very across culture. In Japanese culture too much direct eye contact can be considered disrespectful. One’s ability to pick up on non verbal cues can be indicative of social intelligence. Harvard is conducting an interesting study to test social intelligence by people’s ability to ready expression in others’ eyes. You can find it here: http://kgajos.eecs.harvard.edu/mite/
