The simple beauty of a butterfly tattoo can be a thing of beauty as well as a thing of oppression. Few can see how this may come to pass, but it is an occurrence that has happened to at least myself. The butterfly tattoo is the epitome of feminine tattoos, but that can also lead to come questions if one is not fond of butterflies.
I am a transgender mostly woman (proper title at this time is demigirl (mostly a girl but sometimes nonbinary) but that is for another post). I deeply love tattoos and have only two because money and time are not very fond of working together. The butterfly tattoo is one of the most popular tattoos with women, so I felt like I should get one once I was far enough in my transition that I thought that I was done. But, from a very young age, I have hated butterflies, and as I have gotten further in my transition, I have found that I am not fully female.
So, what kind of tattoo would a demigirl get, or plan to get, to mark the “end” of faer transition? Well, I am planning to get a moth tattoo. It is like a butterfly but not. I am like a girl, but not. It feels right. If I get a moth instead of a butterfly, am I still considered a woman or partially one at least?
Is the butterfly tattoo the gatekeeper of True Womanhood and am I failing the test?
I submit that I am not, I am simply leading the truest Extreme life that I already have, with my body modifications and my constant pills and my tattoos.
But, I am not the one who can answer these questions. Maybe no one can.
Unruly Bodies 
I really like that Moth idea!! You put a lot of thought and reasoning behind why a butterfly doesn’t fit, about transitioning and about being neither nor, here and there. You are by no means failing a test; true person-hood is what you make it, and it never has to be truly defined by a single tattoo.
I agree with sdevora1, it’s not a test, and you’re not failing it! I like that you were able to think of a tattoo that is kind of in line with being a butterfly but more true to your own tastes. I think it’s also really cool that a moth has the same transformation symbolism. Butterflies can, frankly, be overdone, but a moth sounds like it will be unique and meaningful for you 🙂
I too really like the idea of the moth tattoo! I think its something that shows how uniquely beautiful you and your transformation are!! At the end of the day, only you, not a butterfly tattoo, can define who you are, so there is no test to fail! As long as you are being true to yourself then you are already doing it right!
