When the Body Speaks are we Listening?
I am writing this post from a personal point of view and I hope that it will help someone in their journey in life. About 4 years ago I was diagnosed with a very rare brain tumor. I was suffering from a lot of headaches and if someone was to ask me when it started I would have to honestly say that I didn’t know , no I don’t know exactly when they actually started. Like most people we tend to explain our headaches away. We say things like oh maybe I am just hungry or maybe I need to get some rest, or some other excuse. Our bodies are constantly speaking to us but we are not listening to what it is saying. I feel that our body gives us a warning that something is not right. If it is not actually screaming at us we tend to ignore it until it shuts down and decides that if you won’t do anything about the pain that it is going through it takes control of the pain. It is then and only then that some of us will begin to pay attention. And now we have to hang up our doctoring degree. We had to retire Dr. Who, who didn’t really know anything anyway and go see a real medical doctor. So on one of my routine visit to my primary doctor I informed him of the headaches I was having. He sent me to get a CAT scan and it was through the CAT scan they saw a large mass on my brain. I had to get several MRI done to determine how they were going to address this tumor, and what kind of treatment if any that would be required. The tumor was too large to be treated and my only other option was surgery. On June 26, 2011 I went into surgery only to discover that my tumor was misdiagnosed, and my surgeon had to have another biopsy performed on the tumor. My family and I waited in silence, trying to be positive and not think of the worst scenario. The tumor was non cancerous. During my stay in the hospital I ended up being in ICU longer because of a staff infection plus other complication. After about 3 weeks I was allowed to go home and recovered there. I am so very happy that I had people around to help care for me. To make a long story short, here I am in my senior year at UMBC. I was given another chance at life and today I try to live it stress free. I have a goal in mind and that is to finish school, first for me because it reminds me that when life interrupts, you have to pick up what’s left of it and live for YOU, secondly to help others. I had live my life for everyone else, and the day I had to make a choice to live whole or not it was my decision alone. I don’t have the time to play school I have to get what I can from now because tomorrow is not promise to me. So I end with this LISTEN when your body speaks because it TALKS. Don’t listen to Dr. Who.
I really love the intersection here between bodies and language, how the body does talk and sometimes screams, and how we depend on the medical institution to interpret what it is saying, although often their guesses are as good as ours. Thank you so much for sharing this story!
