The Accident

In class we watched the movie regarding the disabled rugby teams. In all honesty I had no idea whatsoever at how intense this sport is and how much work goes into this game. These men have a serious love for this sport and can actually end up getting even more injured because if the wheelchair flips they can break their necks. Regardless of the looming dangers these men go through with it.

As I was watching the movie each individual had a different reason as to why they are in a wheel chair. From what I recall one of those injuries was a car accident, driving a car is something I do everyday. I literally have to drive everywhere and honestly when I am on interstate 95 I go well above the speed limit. The irony behind this is that I know all of the dangers that go into driving too fast. In 2010 I almost died in a car accident. I had my mother’s prayers, guardian angel or whatever one wishes to say it was. I was exactly one block away from my house I was driving a big jeep. My jeep slipped on black ice and I went into the oncoming traffic. I panicked and turned the wheel too much and went head on into a light pole. The light pole was then ripped out of the ground and was coming straight down at me. Right at this moment I knew I was not going to make it but somehow the light pole snapped in half and cut through the roof. I remember looking over and the pole was lying on my passenger seat. I unbuckled my seat belt, picked up the dashboard from my lap and stepped out side. To see that my oil tank leaking and lose wires from the light pole were everywhere. I walked away only with a bruise on my chest from the seatbelt.

I think some people are lucky like me to walk away with no bruises whereas someone else could have the same exact accident and end up on a wheel chair or be really injured.

  1. The film filled with me with gratitude about my health. So often I thought that people who need wheel chairs were born that way or something had happened to them in war. Most of men in the film were not in combat that lead them to not be able to walk. They had gotten into car accidents or been in fights. This scares me because it makes you realize it could happen to you. That’s why it’s so important everyday to appreciate the ability to walk, hear, see, run, breathe, etc. It’s the littlest things people take for granted that are the big losses to other people.

  2. Someone/thing was definitely looking out for you! Wow! Glad to hear you’re okay and that you were left remotely unscathed – physically at least. Really makes you change your perspective going forward in the world.

  3. I thought about this after watching Murderball as well. It’s like I’m on autopilot when I drive, just going through the motions. I never go 10 mile above the speed limit and my friends tell me I drive like a grandma. My cousin died in a car accident 7 years ago, he was speeding on a windy road during an ice storm and hit a tree, he died on impact. If I can control one thing, it’s my driving. Your life can change in an instant.

  4. You’re lucky to have left with a minor injury. It is scary to go through something like this and the experience impacts you every day. It’s important that you know how lucky you are and how living each day to the fullest is necessary because things can change in the blink of an eye!
