The monster who lives in the corner of my eye

I see you, who comes to me and says:

“Why are you here? You are so pretty

Beautiful

Wise

Funny

Handsome

Creative

Why are you here, so far away?”

And I will give a smile, give you a bold-faced lie, say

“Oh, I am not feeling so well.

I am but an introvert.”

Or something else that glibs my mind.

And when you are away, I will frown, and I will remember

The monster in the corner of my eye.

My dearest friend, the one who has lived with me longer than I have

Who has seen me through my trials with but a smile on its face

The one who I hid away.

I do not fear seeing that monster again,

But seeing that reflected in the eyes of others:

Will they run?

Will they throw it away?

I no longer have the courage to see another eye again.

I have seen it shunned by they.

I remember knowing someone who promised to help the monster,

And ran when I showed them the monster in my eye.

They threw their hands up, said “I can’t do it anymore,”

And said goodbye.

And I will cry

For the monster who lives only

In the corner of my eye.

I remember trying to help my monster,

I spoke to everyone about the monster in my eye,

And they threw the monster in my face,

Threw me out of my place in life

And told me:

“only when you have kill the monster,

Only will we let you return”

And so I erased it, without a trace

Displaced into the corner of my eye.

When you turn around, and see my face,

I will cover it behind my daily mask,

Say something that glibs my mind:

“I am merely remembering something,

That a star dies every second, unseen and uncared for.

Today I cry for those who do not have lives.”

And I will cry

For the monster who lives only

In the corner of my eye.
