Just Be Understanding….

I am not just a pretty face. I am so much more. I am not the girl that has everything, and is so spoiled. I suffer with my own issues, which sometimes bring me to tears, because I don’t know what to do. My dad use to say I wasn’t “trying” hard enough… But I was. School has always been so hard for me. And at a young age I was diagnosed with so many learning disabilities. It has been so hard getting through school, it is such a challenge, and sometimes it feels unbearable. When I go to get assistance sometimes it feels like the help is not enough. Extra time is not enough sometimes. I have requested plenty of times to receive class notes and the notes are never consistent. What help is that? UGH! I don’t even want to mention about venting about my situation. OMG!!! I try to tell my friends, they say stuff like I am pretending, or I am not trying hard enough. I may not be physically disabled, but learning disabilities are very serious, and shouldn’t be taken lightly. It is a constant struggle. I believe that no one takes people who suffer with learning disabilities seriously, they don’t know all we go through, and the sleepless nights. If you know someone with a learning disability don’t say they are being lazy or dramatic, try to understand.

  1. I can relate to the problems you face, because I also suffer from a mental disability. Knowing that since mental state is something that is constructed by both individuals and society, and that individuals normalize society’s effect on the construction, it’s insanely hard to be honest, since, well, “Oh, you’re just faking it.”
I also feel like there’s something else at play, like “man why does this person get all this stuff and I don’t?” without realizing “well maybe they start from a less advantaged position that you,” because they’re like “well I’m doing well, and I’m the basis for the standard.”

  2. THIS! I absolutely agree, I’m always fighting myself to even do homework. I was diagnosed with ADD and I have to regurgitate this explanation that someone else came up with, because frankly I couldn’t figure out a relatable idea. All of the other explanations make people with ADHD/ADD sound like lazy brats, who are only capable of focusing on hobbies or oddities. I remember an idea I saw in a Ted talk, how about we treat all learning disabilities for what they are? Different cognitions and teach to that?

  3. I can totally relate to you! Since elementary I have always had a different learning style from the rest of my peers. This set me apart from everyone else. I tend to process information a lot slower than the average student my age. This affected my learning a lot during elementary school which even caused me to be held back in 1st grade. I attended a French system elementary school in Guinea West Africa, which is more challenging than school in America. Then I moved to the U.S for middle school which was bit more challenging since I had to learn english but things got a lot better. Although I went to a great school while I lived in Africa, however things like learning disabilities are not recognized, so as I grew older I began to be more confident in myself and trying to make my learning style not a learning disability, but rather an ability to learn things which differs from the norm.
