I want to write a post about masturbation, not for any particular reason other than I’m sad I haven’t seen any posts about it and I think it’s a cool/interesting/important thing to talk about and acknowledge about bodies. I guess I want to write specifically about masturbation for people who don’t have penises – because masturbation when it comes to penises is an accepted phenomenon and kind of is such a normal thing that’s it’s sometimes a joke. People with vaginas aren’t usually allowed to see their bodies as sites of sexual pleasure (or any kind of pleasure really).
In movies/generally consumed media, penis jokes, implied male masturbation, and male orgasms can be commonplace and normal, while masturbation, sexual pleasure, orgasm, etc. having to do with female bodies are very rarely depicted without lots of restrictions. Our society/media/education/etc. feeds us a narrative that bodies with
vaginas, and especially female bodies, are sexual insofar as its for reproduction or for a man. Media can have half-naked or even mostly-naked women, similar to men, but the presence of this is for the male-gaze and male enjoyment. Even in movies like But I’m A Cheerleader, where the focus is on two lesbian women and their relationship, there was a scene of a woman masturbating that was deleted in order for the movie to be released with an R rating instead of an NC17 rating. In the end, there is a scene where one of the female characters can be seen discreetly shocking herself with a device (which was a shocking device that the girls were supposed to use on themselves when they thought lesbian thoughts in order to train them out of it) under a blanket as a not-so-subtle-way, but vaguely enough, to allude to masturbation, but not be forthright with the concept.
I want to normalize talking about female masturbation, vaginal masturbation, clitoral stimulation. I want to normalize sex toys and making sure that people know that people with vaginas can and should be able to achieve orgasm and that it’s important that they do (if they want). I want our media to recognize sexual pleasure for bodies with vaginas the same way it recognizes bodies with penises. I’m tired, bored, and frustrated with the society that refuses to acknowledge these things and I want to challenge us all to be better/more aware.
Really interesting perspective. You definitely are talking about something that is important but also something that a person could go years and years without talking about because of how it may be considered taboo or “not nice” for lack of better words. But in reality it’s not. It’s a normal part of life and it’s 100% natural. The world should challenge the stigma of it’s perspective and should be more accepting to female stimulation as they are to male stimulation. Really interesting read and I will keep a look out to see where this interesting idea goes
Honestly, I’m so fed up with the lack of acknowledgment of vaginal/clitoral masturbation in the media. I feel as though people with penises have an instruction manual ingrained into society and we’re just left with people on the internet saying ‘just do whatever feels right :D’. To be quite honest I still haven’t figured out how it works and I’m not even a teenager anymore. I’m sick of penile masturbation being a commonly accepted phenomenon while vaginal masturbation remains taboo.
Until recently I didn’t realize this double standard, mostly because I don’t have a vagina, therefore there was very little reason to think about this. But, I do agree that the stigma against vaginal masturbation. It’s very important to normalize discussion about our bodies in many ways, including masturbation. I just hope that it doesn’t become a joke like penile masturbation. Those jokes tend to be gross. I still find them funny, but they’re funny because they’re crude and gross. I would rather see masturbation in any form normalized to the point where they are not disgusting to talk about, instead they’d be treated as part of life.
This was a very interesting read. I agree with @alberti4, I too did not realize that this double standard existed, because I am a man and never really talk about this. So I never really thought about it too much and just assumed vaginal masturbation was as common and as accepted. But reading your post has actually given me a view and made me realize that this is really a problem and I feel like it is important that we start to address this right now.
Agree with everything you said. With masturbation being such a common activity for pleasure, stress relief, and many other things it’s sad that this subject is locked away and only used for jokes, and when it is used for jokes it’s all about guys. In a way I feel like this type of exposure tells girls going through puberty that they shouldn’t masturbate.
