FAT people deserve LOVE

Fat people deserve love to… Why does it feel as though people hate fat people? Why is it so wrong to be fat, or overweight, or just NOT skinny. The beauty standard does not reflect fat people. I get that but now the beauty standards have altered a bit. In which women specifically can be more curvy especially in the ass or bust. However, even now that the beauty standard or should I say, beauty trends have shifted from Victoria’s Secret model to fashion nova model, it seems that the hate of fat people is worse. As a fat black woman myself I see this a lot in which you fit in neither category of the beauty standards set in America. You’re not skinny enough, yet you’re not busty enough or you don’t have an ass or curves. As if curves are needed… to be considered attractive if YOU do happen to be fat. This then leads into if you are not the beauty standard….. Can you still be attractive? Do you still deserve love? Yes you do of course,  but then why do I feel like I have to cower when an attractive man comes towards me or why I feel as though what I look like now is not enough. I mean I believe I deserve love but feel as though I can not attain it while I am fat.. If I just lost some weight … maybe just maybe.

I’m gonna stop there because I just went on a tangent but I also wanted to tie this back to class which is why I wanted to mention how I watched a few of the maintenance phase podcasts. First, I love this podcast! Now one of my favorites. I was listening to one which is called fat camps. Imagine your parents hate the fact that you are fat or you hate that you are fat sooo much you enter a fat camp. I was blown away at first because whattttt like you pay thousands of dollars to undergo strenuous activities and a calorie deficit to MAYBE come out weighing less. I find this intertwines with my earlier point in which people will literally starve or cause their body repeated physical stress in order to inhabit a body comparable to the beauty standards. The world is such a sad one in which fat people can not just be people and live their lives in peace without the constant reminder that they’re not skinny enough. This is apparent through pop culture, social media, classroom seats, airplane aisles, roller coaster rides and more that I care not to mention. I believe we all deserve to be comfortable in our skin and we deserve for others to see us that way. We deserve love too.

  1. *giving you your flowers* I think that in this world there is a huge call for diversity when it comes to gender, sexuality, race, but we don’t really hear about diversity when it comes to size. Like in TV shows you have the skinny friend who falls in love and has a great life but then the bigger friend (and I say bigger because I don’t think anyone is really fat they are just phat or thicc) but the bigger friend is just there for comedic relief and its like, oh do they not deserve to be the main character? It’s not fair that some people have to be so self conscious about their weight because of social standards. I remember my grandma told me I was gaining weight and said that I better have a good personality because I was getting fat, and it really effected my mental becasue I was already in bad place but then she says that, not going to lie I wanted to drop kick her right then and there lmao.

    • Word! @babygoat3000 Im with you in the sense that fat is something people eat and also something that bodies metabolize sugar into but because we have been socialized to accept that a person who has a certain amount of body fat has to own it as a part of their personhood, many people embrace the term fat as a part of their identity. This is problematic in my opinion. Fat is what we have not who we are.

  2. Hello! I really agree with you that fat people deserve love too. Beauty standards in America are so unrealistic. If you’re not skinny with fat in the “right” places, you’re not viewed as beautiful. It’s also terrible how women are simultaneously accepted for having more fat but also more criticized and fetishized for it.

  3. I think everyone deserves to be loved! We see many models with fantastic bodies, hair, and perfect glowing skin. But often, they are not as happy as people think they are. I believe very skinny people do not look good in specific clothing. As you mentioned in your post, you don’t think you look terrific in certain clothes. I believe everyone has different bodies and can rock any look they want as long as they think they look fantastic.

  4. I also really enjoyed listening to the maintenance phase podcast, and I plan on listening to more episodes. I listened to the fat camps episode as well and I thought it was insane that parents would send their kids to these camps to lose weight even though their kids have the same body type as them. The fact that these camps don’t even have long term effects makes it even worse that kids have to go through this kind of experience and learn unhealthy habits to not even achieve what they wanted. I was surprised that these camps are still around promoting the same kind of hurtful message, even if they have tried to rebrand themselves.

  5. I definitely agree on all points. People are real jerks to heavier people, and it just sucks. I think society is just unaccommodating to anyone who deviates from the norm in any way. Which is weird because in animals those individuals tend to be more attractive.

  6. Hi! ALL people deserve love, no matter what size. It makes me sad that fat people are so shamed in society. I find myself still hearing murmured comments on what a fat person should or shouldn’t be wearing, and it makes my stomach turn. I LOVE seeing fat people embracing their bodies and living with confidence, although I know it is difficult. Close-minded and ignorant people assume someone is fat just because they “eat too much” or are “lazy”, when some people are just made that way. Know that there are people rooting for you, and more people than you may think 🙂
