Fat Shaming and Diet Culture

My body isn’t my weight. Food isn’t my issue. Diet culture can starve already. People need to thrive. Fat bodies are human bodies. Fat bodies are beautiful bodies. Fat bodies are capable bodies. Fat bodies are healthy bodies. Fat bodies are strong bodies. Fat bodies are normal bodies just as all bodies are just that. BODIES.

  1. The culture and expectations of our bodies are so severe in a place where our food is slowly poisoning us even if it is “healthy.” Drugs and diets were sometimes promoted by companies even if they knew they were harmful for financial gain, which needs to change. For some people, no matter how hard they exercise and their diets, they have more prominent bodies. It is just in their DNA, but that does not mean they are less worthy of love and happiness. In the past, having a more pronounced body was a sign of wealth and health to be deemed more attractive. Gaining and losing weight, and the different trends, has been in a vicious cycle where you can only have fat in certain areas of the body to be more appealing to others. This is not physically possible for most people, which is entirely normal. I see it as our bodies being the undecided and sometimes adaptable vessels made to have experiences that shape us into our true selves.

  2. I could not agree with you more. All bodies are bodies and they should all be looked at and treated the same way. Society has perpetually promoted the “ideal” body image throughout time. That image is someone who is thin, and since they are thin, they are considered beautiful. Only recently has society promoted the idea of body positivity. But even then, the women who are not accepted by those on social media are criticized for how they look. This reminds me of our conversation in class, about whether fat had a negative connotation or not. Society has definitely made “fat” into a criticism that carries such negative connotations with it. I hope that one day people in society will be accepting of all body types and stop inserting themselves into the lives of random people to make judgements about them.
