WHO WOULD WIN?

(like those books – I tried without success to use a font similar to to the one on their covers)
Don’t get me wrong here – I’m grateful as hell not to have a conservative and outwardly bigoted family. I’m thankful that I can (generally) be myself without fear at family gatherings. I have one uncle (married in) who voted for Trump, but he knows better than to cause issues over my being gay.
Unfortunately, though, the blue votes and detest for Donald Trump don’t mean much for their overall views.
I’ve been taken aback before at how readily a different uncle views conservatives as poor, stupid, uneducated, white trash, and plainly said if that makes him classist then he’s classist. Instead of focusing on how poor education is a systemic issue in the South, he just wants to focus on how that turns them into poor, stupid Trumpers.
My Nana likes to flip-flop her views on men and sex as is convenient to her argument. If she wants to argue that men are trash, it’s “You don’t need men, get yourself a vibrator!” If she wants to argue with me about my being a lesbian, it’s “Plastic will never beat the real thing, you’ll see one day…” She’s sure that one day my body will realize how good a real, biological, flesh-and-blood penis feels. Lesbians get more shit from her than gay men, cause at least she can still find gay men sexy. And at least gay men aren’t birthing babies regardless.
And Women can do what they wish and deserve reproductive freedom but she’ll still harass her son’s girlfriend about when she’s gonna come around to wanting kids so my grandma can have more grandbabies before she dies.
My mom is cool with trans people in theory, but it’s precarious enough I’m scared to tell her what my ex-girlfriend from my senior year of high school did for fear she’ll change her mind and decide she did those things because of her sex at birth or that she transitioned for the same perverted reasons she did those things or that she transitioned to do those things.
My grandpa is one of the sweetest people I know, but he’s sure to warn me how unsafe my cousin’s neighborhood is whenever I mention living there. It’s a quiet neighborhood – mostly families. Little kids play in their yards all the time. But it’s in the city – it’s majority Black.
At least, to some extent, conservatives are aware of their biases. It’s hard to talk to people about biases they don’t even know they’re holding and when they’re still so convinced they’re the reasonable, kind ones. I’m somewhat dreading the holidays at the moment even though I have such a comparably good, supportive family.
I completely understand the conflicting feelings with family. For many of our family members, they’ve been taught for so long that the other point of view doesn’t matter; than the biases are correct and well documented. It’s a struggle to love family that supports you, but not the communities you’re in or who you love. I know for me, if I were to try to explain these things, my life would get harder exponentially. In a lot of more liberal spaces, theres an all or nothing mentality regarding conservative family, which isolates us even more. Here’s to hoping the holidays go smoothly for us friend!
I agree with this wholeheartedly. Unfortunately I don’t have a family that’s as progressive but at least they aren’t performative minus my mom. Most of my family is Christian so they are pretty spoken for in terms of their views on lgbtq+ individuals but like you said I just wish people were more honest so we can have a gauge on who we still need to convince.
