No chair beneath me, but pain still builds its throne.

They call it “the easy way out”                                                                                                   While I carry a lifetime of shame like armor I never asked for.

Can I get common decency without starving for it?

The heat took everything, but their cameras took more                                                                Do you smell that?                                                                                                                    That’s a life unraveling while they chase the perfect angle.                                                           Did the flames illuminate enough for your feed?                                                                        Was someone’s final moment bright enough for you?

  1. This entire reading has given me goosebumps all over my body. Your voice is truly provocative in a wonderful way, and your word choice is intelligent. Always being perceived as armed and dangerous when your skin is a weapon, and the inability to fit in or be “just right” about something so visible and unchangeable is very moving. Emphasizing invisible disabilities with a lack of a wheelchair yet still utilizing imagery of a “throne of pain” is beautiful. Using armor to draw a connection to fat bodies perfectly allows visualization of both a physical and mental burden. “Was someone’s final moment bright enough for you?” reads as a wake-up call especially in the digital age where we are so desensitized to distressing and gory media.
