So after going through the Fat Bodies section in General Women Studies Class, I was left a bit uneasy. And you can’t blame me, like how can I accept the fact that the media wants to control what women put in their mouths and constantly blame regular women for the way they look? It’s all pure nonsense. Whatever happened to embracing one’s curves, however they look, big or small? I just don’t understand it. It frustrates me greatly.
Let me start by pointing out the specific facts concerning society and our media that want me want to tear my hair out until I become nearly bald. (No really.) Let me start with how in the past, it was appreciated to be considered healthy. A female with a noticeably fuller figure was viewed as more attractive, in a higher status, or better yet, would be considered as a great candidate for mating. Now, due to the 1980’s and 1990’s ideology of a “thin woman” that has invaded the media, now the American public only idolizes severely thin women. And when I say severely thin, I really do mean so. Just check out the models modeling designer clothes these days, such as Victoria’s Secret models. Not one of them could represent the physical appearance of an average woman in America today. That is sad and heartbreaking. I’m not trying to attack skinny people, they are beautiful in their own way, but not if the media is promoting only malnourished female human beings and not healthy women of ALL body types.
This reference to only thin women in the media tends to have a negative effect on plenty of females, including myself. We start comparing ourselves to these thin human beings, and even worse commercial photos that we know are photoshopped. Check out how they altered this image of Jennifer Lawrence.
Shameful, huh? I know I feel your pain. And the sad part is that I and others would actually think that we NEED to be the smaller size. Well I’m here to tell you NO. Don’t ever try to change your body appearance because SOCIETY says so. I approve of losing weight for positive personal reasons, but that’s another story. I’m basically writing this post to vent out my frustrations about how the media treats women, and to tell every female out there that they are completely normal and beautiful the way they are; short, tall chubby, slim, curvy, medium, however, I just want everyone to be happy and healthy with themselves. Maybe this photo sums it up:
Oh yeah, and here’s a quick PSA to the media regarding how women should look:

Great post, love the graphics and content. This post contains powerful statements; the media does portray an idealized body that in reality won’t be achievable for many people while living a normal healthy life, which entails eating a balance and healthy diet that is sufficient to get rid of hunger. Due to these portrayals many people do feel the need to change their bodies so they can match up to these unrealistic figures often portrayed. This is a commercialized thing that makes people insecure about their bodies in order for demand to rise and supply to increase as well .Once people realize this is all about production and stop buying into these commercials then we will be able to accept bodies as they are in their natural forms.
