Last year Kelly Martin Broderick wrote a blog post about The Great Wall of Vagina. As an artist myself I was able to appreciate the wall as art. I cannot imagine the time and effort the artist put into every cast. The fact that so many women took time to participate is amazing!
I decided to do a bit of research and came across PENIS. Big ones, short ones, fat ones, long one and the list goes on. Joseph Tailor’s project entitled ‘Art Work “100” ‘ is a casting project of many penis. This made me extremely uncomfortable. I didn’t understand why. I don’t mind looking at my boyfriend’s penis. His is pretty cool. I also didn’t mind looking at the wall of vaginas.
(Yes that is a Golden Penis. Not to be confused with the Golden Snitch)
Thinking hard -no pun intended- about my feelings I came to the conclusion that it was because of the form of the penis. Let me explain:
The vaginas on the great wall are all carefully placed and appear to be that of relief sculptures. They are delicate and unique. This is truly how a vagina looks.
While each penis is also unique I felt almost as if they were looking at me. I realize it was easiest to capture the mold of a penis while it was hard but this is not realistic. A man’s penis can only achieve maximum size when it is erect. Does that mean you’re “less of a man” when it’s not?

For me, I find looking at the wall of vagina far more shocking than looking at the wall of penis. While neither genital is represented in its stark naked form in advertising and the media, I feel that the phallic symbol is far more prevalent than that of a vagina. In advertising that plays on sexuality, the part of a woman that is sexualized is her breasts, but for a man it is his penis or the implication of his penis. So many ads contain imagery and allusions to erections, while hardly any call to mind a vagina. Think of it this way: how often do we see penis doodles grafittied on desks or walls? Do we ever even seen vagina doodles? Do people even know how to draw a vagina? When it comes to representation, the penis is king. I do see your point about the wall of penis; it is extremely bold and eye-catching and could certainly be unsettling. However, I find the casts of vaginas to be truly shocking as they, in all their various shapes and sizes, are for once on display for all to see.
After looking at the casts of the penises, I feel like my space has been invaded somehow. Most likely because of it being an external sex organ. When viewing the great wall of vagina it is more beautiful and artfully done. Where as the penis wall almost seem like some kind of joke because perhaps the penis has been the butt of jokes and been made a mockery of throughout societal history.
Naranja1 I think you’re right. Certainly in my case there had been mockery and jokes. At 2.5 inches long and thin, I’ve heard it all.
I don’t think being erect makes a man more of a man. That’s like saying you’re less of a woman when your vagina isn’t tented. That aside, I really love both of these projects. The vaginas are more shocking because of how often they are depicted in the media (rarely) and in society. Then again how easy would that be really? The penises I feel attached to because I’m tired if hearing how ugly they are and how they’re not seen as beautiful. You hear criticism of the vagina that are similar but you can find people that agree that the vagina is beautiful online, in person, in art, but I’ve been hard pressed to find anyone to agree with me that the penis is beautiful, or to at least take the penis for more than just a joke or a threat. I personally think both of them are beautiful and equally worthy of love and admiration.
