We are almost, there! Semester is about to finish, and in eight days a new season will start. I have been waiting for this for three months now. Not the end of the semester, but the end of this fall season and cold weather!
Every Fall I have to deal with a seasonal sickness, called allergy! This semester what I went through was different, hard, and very tough. To be honest I think I can call it “invisible sickness”. Every year during fall season/ semester my mode changes and sometimes I am not even “me”. This year I became sick as well, inside and out, symptoms were more and stronger, and therefore it affected me in a more serious way.
I usually sleep between 4-8 hours and that is the only way I can manage my life. This semester I was a first year Resident Assistant, took 5 classes, was involved in two clubs, and also I was working. Due to my allergy I was mostly tired, sleep or sleepy. Let’s say 8-11 hours of sleep per day! This, and being English as Second Language speaker, made me fall behind in my life and academics. In other hand most of the semester I had body pain. I usually tried to smile and get through my day so people wouldn’t know I am sick. Sometimes it was successful sometimes not!
Long story short, it was interesting for me to be in this class learning about invisible disability, while I am going thought a sickness that is not visible. I sometimes liked to relate the information that we learned to my situation and study the reactions that people had to my situation. Due to this sickness, I would sometimes forget my tasks or conversations that I had with people. I was sometimes very tired to even remember some of the tasks or conversations that I had. I was always amazed to see how people would react to me and my situation. When I would look sick, forget stuff, or I when was just slow.
In other hand I loved to pay attention and study the reaction of the people that knew about my situation. Level of ignorance and understanding of it in both cases was very interesting. In my opinion there was no right or wrong reaction, but it was absolutely amazing to see different kind of it.
Bodies are complicated and very fascinating; it’s even more interesting to see how your mind and brain can affected the ability of your body and even people’s reaction. I got to experience this feeling this semester, and it was just interesting! Overall what I learned in this class helped me to get through my sickness and look at it with another perspective.
I never suffered from allergies before until this year when they developed. I never knew it was possible to “develop” an allergy. It happened at work while eating my favorite fruit (watermelon) and my tongue became swollen 😦 At first I was angry because it felt as if my body was turning on me. Attacking me in a way. Now I realize it’s just a change that my body made and I have no control over it. So I just found a new go to fruit! (hopefully I don’t reject that too!)
I have suffered from almost all sorts of allergies all my lifes, and I have visited alot of doctors; tried different kinds of medicines and treatments as well. But nothing can helped, even the doctors did not know why. It’s just horrible and stressful. Now, I am pretty much allergic to everything, and I feel I am out of control of my body.
