“No you can’t be gay, you just haven’t found the right guy yet.”

My sister is a proud lesbian. As proud as they come. She’s the Teddy Roosevelt of gays, waving a rainbow flag as a bald eagle glides around her…and I love her for it. We talk about it frequently like it’s nothing (because it shouldn’t be a big deal), so when we encounter someone who actually doesn’t love her for it, it’s always a huge shock.

My sister threw a holiday party last week and we met someone new. Once we mentioned in the conversation that she was gay, you would have thought we said she was previously Harrison Ford:

“What? That’s a joke right? You’re not actually gay?”

Once she said she was he responded:

“Oh no. No no no. You’re not gay. No. you can’t be gay, you just haven’t found the right guy yet.”

How do you respond to something like that? Who gets to be the judge of whether or not my sister is gay? She went through another time when a guy really liked her, and when she continuously reiterated she was gay his response was, “It’s just a phase! You’ll grow out of it!” I’m sorry, it’s not a cyst on the side of her arm, it’s who she is.

I know our country is making a lot progress towards legalizing gay marriage throughout the United States, but I am constantly reminded that the country needs far more than that for the LGBT community to be fully accepted. There was just a news report last week of a young boy killing himself after being bullied for being on a cheerleading squad. Where do we even start to not only gain support from the country, but also show the opposition that literally nothing is wrong with being a LGBT.

  1. First of all, good for your sister! It’s strange how we forget that there are still people out there that do not see eye to eye with us politically… I assume everyone is progressive (even my republican father is pretty liberal minded). It will take people like your sister and yourself to not only remind others that homosexuality is as “normal” as heterosexuality, but have them get to know you and understand that you are more than capable of making your own decisions… just like they are. May she help change minds for the rest of her life!

  2. Yeah, I’m sure this was enough to convince her that straight men are the way to go! His missionary work will not go unnoticed!!

  3. Isn’t it neat how whenever a girl is gay it’s because she hasn’t found the right guy yet, and if it’s a boy it’s because he lacked a ‘strong father figure’ growing up. What a coincidence. Almost like men’s egos control the narrative on the identities of others.

  4. People always argue about whether being gay is a choice or a biological determined thing. I think it is both. Many people are born that way, but some people would choose to stand out and say that ” he or she is gay”, others would just try to hide that because of the community discouragement.

  5. I really love this blog because it attacks the gay controversy. I believe a lot of “just people acceptance” in general would have to go on in order to happen. Our society has to take on the real issue of judging others for their differences first.

  6. I really like this post. I dated one guy in high school, women for eight years a then my husband. A few people told me the same thing…see you were waiting for the right guy. Honestly, the statement pisses me off because my best friend is married to a woman and I have other friends that have been in same sex relationships for years. Its such an ignorant statement. I always hope no one uses me as an example to that statement.
