I finally started season 4 of Homeland on ShowTime. I was pretty excited to finally get to start this season since I’ve been holding off for a while. Finally got to episode 2 and one of the main characters, Quinn, ended up having sex with a fairly large woman. In that moment I began to wonder what would people think after they saw this. To my own surprise I was even in shock and I myself am a large woman. We are so used to seeing “normal” weight people having sex on television. It’s almost like a normal thing to watch a T.V. drama and see sex in it, and if not its like where is the sex? But to watch a fat person having sex with a skinny person is unseen and unheard of most of the time. I mean unless we are diving into the the BBW porn or “fetish”, we never even think about these types of situations. Come to think of it, I can’t remember ever seeing any fat actors having any sex at all on T.V. or at least I can’t recall it. I mean we have been so closed off and some even disgusted at the idea that they would allow such a thing to happen. Honestly, it was a breathe of fresh air to see something different, that the producers took a “chance”. I believe it brings light to the reality of things, that people who are overweight/fat/large/etc. aren’t sexless or are too fat for sex. That fat people are in fact people and that they have feelings and live daily lives like everyone else. It’s this type of censorship that has existed for so long that makes people who are fat think they aren’t allowed to shed skin or that they should feel ashamed. I can’t exactly imagine all the reactions of all the Homeland fanatics who watched this episode, but I would like to think that there are people out there who were happy to see a change being broadcasted. Could this mean more fat women in television will be having sex scenes? Is there something wrong with this? I think if we open our minds a little we will see that weight is not the issue, it’s peoples perception of perfection that is skewed. By the way the woman was absolutely beautiful.
You know, I always think about societal norms as I watch television. I literally think of statistics and research as I watch movies. I can’t help it, I am a thinker. That being said, I recall a time when body weight was cringeworthy and not in the good way. I remember when people would be repulsed by body weight like overweight people or the female body and even talk of a period on television. I remember things like this NEVER happened and if they did, God help the show. This even impacted me in my youth and adult hood where I have this skewed version of reality that I am working on changing myself. I am so happy to see diversity on television now. This has significantly helped me reshape my words, thoughts, and feelings about my own self. I liked your analysis.
