Most people go to the doctor when they are sick to get a diagnosis, medication, or simply to feel better. We all know how it goes…
You tell them how you feel, describing your symptoms the best way you can. Then they tell you how they think you feel. When did going to the doctor become a way for someone to tell YOU how YOUR body feels?
Recently I grappled with this question. I went to see a doctor because I was experiencing flu/cold-like symptoms. I explained my symptoms, while my doctor paraphrased what they thought I said. A test was done which came back negative (always happens!). Therefore, I was told that nothing was wrong with me and I would feel better in a few days. WRONG. Days passed, my symptoms worsened and contrary to what was told to me, I did not feel better. Being a sick body, I thought how ridiculous it was for someone to tell me that my body was fine when I knew the contrary. I felt the symptoms and the discomfort, not the doctor. I know my own body better than anyone.
Be confident in how you are feeling and never discount what your body is telling you.

Great advice!
What you described is way too common! In our society, doctors are treated as if they’re all-knowing, infallible people. Because of this, we’re told to trust what someone else says about our own body, which can sometimes lead to misdiagnoses and all sorts of trouble. We need to remember to trust our connection with out bodies so we can get better.
Going to the doctor is already scary enough but yet relief in sort of a way because of the excitement that I at least get that I’m going to feel better and what my doctor is going to prescribe to me. It is very difficult to explain your symptoms, but I believe getting a doctor that you have a foundation with makes things easier
I think that as a society we are supposed to hold doctors in high esteem. They are supposed to know everything and make everyone feel better. I know I thought this when I was kid but when I got older I realized that I have a say in how I am feeling and what I want to do it about. You are totally right about listening to your body instead of listening to someone who is supposed to know how to make you feel better. I think that people need to be aware of the fact that doctors aren’t the authority figure on how you are going to feel.
I’m glad you posted on this topic. This is one I’m extremely passionate about. Doctors are often great and other times they leave a lot to be desired. As I’ve gotten older I’ve been completely horrified at the amount of quacks on the loose in the medical community. My jaw almost hit the ground when a dermatologist told me that vitamins don’t work and I really shouldn’t bother with them. I completely agree that I know my body better then anyone. When I get an answer that doesn’t feel right or one blows me off I just take my business elsewhere. I’m all about second, and third opinions!
