Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas… Tis’ the season that we as a society come together to celebrate wonderful holidays full of tradition… But it seems as though that with the pass of each generation, we (society) remember less and less of what the holidays are really about. Instead, we gather in our groups to celebrate the giving of gifts and acts of gluttony… And let’s not forget about black Friday, a day which origin can be traced back to a plot to bankrupt a nation, is now celebrated by consumerism, and violently fueled greed as people push and shove their way past other humans for material goods. Now I know it must be acknowledged that not everyone has forgotten about the true spirit of holidays, but if you take a look around, you will see that in many ways, the original tradition is being lost…
My point is not to just talk about the lack of tradition, but to say (relating to the class) that the amount of family and friendly gathering surrounded around large amounts of food is outstanding. It’s funny how we eat and eat without a care during the winter months, packing on pounds as if we are trying to put food away for a restful hibernation… Only for spring and summer to roll around again as we struggle to starve ourselves and “get our summer bod back”… The idea that we can eat in moderation all year round is a foreign concept to most, yet it could be our answer to many of our fluctuating body’s questions.
Yes! So many people in my family seem to have lost the true meaning of the holidays, and their spirits are dying. We go online and shop while eating Thanksgiving dinner at a buffet (because everyone has gotten too tired to cook), and all they seem to care about is what they receive during the holidays, when the whole point is to give to others and be around one another. Not all people have lost sight of the true meaning of the holidays, but a lot of society has.
It’s almost as if holidays are to create an illusion of what “should” be. For example, on Holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas families usually meet up, whether they like it or not. Often, families will make trips to see extended families and have a celebration together, which can be a beautiful thing. At the same time, does every single family that celebrate those holidays really want to see all of their extended family? Holidays make it seems as though people are expected to have a certain amount of interaction with families otherwise it’s not meeting up to the standards of the holidays.
I think its just how media has affected out society. It’s sort of forced severe capitalism on us to the point where people are getting robbed for Jordans as soon as they leave the store and kids are getting trampled for clothes
Ugh yes, exactly my feelings towards the holiday season. Maybe it’s because I become more jaded as I get older but I just don’t care for the holidays anymore. To me, the only thing I care about is being around loved ones during this time, I could care less about the massive amounts of food or gifts. I’m not a religious person either, so Christmas really has no meaning to me. As we all get older, I think it’s our responsibility to create our own holiday traditions. Gather with friends, drink wine, and laugh often.
