Love, trust, communication, intimacy… All are just a few staples of a healthy relationship, but what is to come when the intimacy leaves the building?
Throughout my life I would like to think I have had pretty well-rounded relationships with others. The ones that seemed to fit had proven to be pretty healthy and the intimacy was no question. Until recently, around the beginning of this year in fact, I had lost all interest in sex. Not only with my partner, but in general… I felt like I was a broken toy or something. I began to worry after a month went by. I thought to myself, ok, I’m 24 years old, I put a lot of stress on myself in my daily life, maybe that’s the problem? Possibly. I felt so bad for my partner because they need love too… I tried multiple things to spice things up but it all felt useless to me, and nothing seemed to do it for me. I began having the mindset that everything is fine, as long as THEY get off. I had no interest in doing anything, not even by myself (and that would ALWAYS do the trick before). The fact that I felt so hypersexual until this point in life worried me, like my body just sped up the process of longevity of wanting sex, and the time had ticked out. I mean I know recently there have been pills created for increasing a women’s libido, but I’m 24… I felt old, or like my body was depressed, that my light went out… Has my body just had enough and did I get it all out of my system unwillingly?? thought this dry spell would have ended by now…
So I guess my question is, what do you do when you’ve lost your libido? and is a relationship still legitimate and possible without sex, or does it slowly drop back into the arms of friendship?
To answer your question, I do believe a true relationship can be legitimate without sex. A good way to look at this is to look at sex as a plus to a relationship. Sex should never make the relationship, if you feel that it does then it was never a true relationship. A true, valuable relationship is based off of the mental part of it, not the physical part of it. If you and your partner can connect on an intellectual level then everything else will fall into place. I hope this helps!
I am someone with a healthy sex drive. Sometimes it just seems to vacate the premises. When that happens, I take that as a time to go within and look at myself. Often there are things going on that need my attention. Sometimes it is just that I have a lot going on and am overwhelmed. Sometimes it is needing to work things out within my relationship. When my libido wanes, I do self-care and try to give myself and my partner non-sexual intimacy, so there is still connection.
Whether or not a relationship can live without sex has so much to do with what the people involved in the relationship want and need and the willingness of the people involved to weather changes together. Communication helps so much. I think you were damn brave to put this out there. My best wishes to you.
