Not too long ago, my friends and I were having a conversation about who should pay on a date, the men or the women. It seems the minute we talk about things in terms of gender, that’s when people want to have something to say. One of my friends thought that because her date is a guy that meant he had to pay, because it just makes a “good impression.” So then I asked what about a gay couple who goes on a date, she said whichever person is more “manly” should pay. After she said that, the only think I could tell her is this “why don’t you take a Gender Women’s Studies course, I swear it will change your life.” All jokes aside, I didn’t blame her for thinking that way, I just silently blamed society in my head. We have been taught that men are at the front of everything, they must be the provider, strong, unemotional, attractive, and all of that. Women on the other hand NO NO NO, we’re not supposed to pay for dinner, that’s a man’s job, all we have to do is look pretty and just show up. I’m still surprise to think that some women still value themselves below a man, despite all the feminists movements that’s been happening in today’s society.
This was a good read. I find myself in the predicaments that you had questioned. As a woman I have been told men are supposed to pay. For me, I think it can be either or. When I went on my first date with my boyfriend, he payed for our meal but I left the tip . He looked at me in shock. I was confused because I felt as if that’s what you should do to be courteous. I guess it all depends on the relationship of the couple and the type of person you are.
