America, Girl… Am I in Trouble?

TW// I’m a democrat (idk if this is even a real TW, but just in case, you can’t say I didn’t warn you, lol)

Okay, I’m going to speak completely from my heart for this post. I want to talk about the current 2020 presidential election. I want to say that I’m so excited, as president-elect Joe Biden and vice-president-elect Kamala Harris were elected as the two leaders of our free world. In regards to Harris, I’m EXTREMELY excited that she’s made history for us minority women. I mean… OUR NEXT VICE PRESIDENT IS A WOMAN, TAKE THAT PATRIARCHY! LOL! Us women are really uplifting and empowering one another to get into these spaces that women either have never dominated, or ever even been present in. So, kudos to Kamala Harris!

However, I can’t lie when I say I have a few worries about what could possibly unfold as a result of both Biden’s and Harris’ election. Personally, I’m mainly scared about the “civil unrest” that is said to be coming, or expected. I was talking with my mother earlier today and what I said was that if history serves me correctly, any time that Blacks or any minorities, honestly, made any kind of strides, there was great backlash. For example, I referenced back to slavery times and how Blacks eventually were able to vote, but there were so many unceccessary tests and obstacles in order to do so.. It made it damn near impossible; or, the time when we elected our first Black president, Barack Obama and what happened? We took two steps forward and then ten steps backwards, where Donald Tr*mp was elected and unfair, or unlawful treatments and killings of Blacks escalated even more. My mother even agreed and understood where I was coming from, but she didn’t really have any solid responses and that’s okay because she simply can’t tell me what’s going to happen in the future.

On the other hand, I also have a lot of people surrounding me that are telling me to anticipate things happening. I mean, even with the past buzz surrounding the election, it was always including, “get prepared, because if Biden wins, Tr*mp supporters are not going out without a fight”, people even utter this statement to this day; and what else didn’t help? The email I saw that Tr*mp sent out, about his supporters going out and protecting the vote by any means necessary. Then, I saw the news where people were really protesting to “stop the count”?! I’m scared, yall. I really am. I don’t like violence, weapons, fighting, none of it. I’m more of a calm, cool and collected individual; I have a way with my words, but as far as physical means.. That’s just not me, at all.

In the end, I guess all I can really do is remain calm and take a self defense class maybe? I made a comment and told my ex-boyfriend that I was moving in with him. If anything, he’s grown up having to always look out for himself, I know he’ll keep us safe, or at least die trying; not to sound harsh, but it’s a very real reality for us right now.

  1. Looking back on this post a week later, after one large MAGA rally has already happened, provides an interesting perspective. Seeing the reaction so far, I’m honestly a little surprised at how non-confrontational Tr*mp supporters have been. That said, they also haven’t been provoked as a whole and the current President has not fully admitted to losing.

As we move towards January 20th, i hope that things trend down and Tr*mp supporters have a sense of maturity and respect to losing. I hope. I hope. I hope

  2. I’m reading this today after just seeing news about hundreds of thousands of Trump supporters protesting in DC today. Not only is that scary, but as a Black person, a queer person, a marginalized person in general, seeing people protest for white supremacy feels so disgusting and disrespectful to me. It feels almost like a mockery. Black people spent the entire summer this year protesting for people to care enough about us to be mad when police murder us on a daily basis. That is a real, life or death issue. Queer people protesting for Black trans women not to be murdered by cis men. That is a real, life or death issue. White Trump supporters protested today because they were so bored and so privileged that the only thing they have to be mad about is the fact that Donald Trump legally lost a presidential election he never deserved to run in in the first place. On top of that, these protesters were not dragged off the street by policed, they weren’t tear gassed or beaten down or arrested in droves. And I know they knew that if they protested, there would be no consequences because they’re white. And because many of their Trump supporting friends/family are also cops. I feel like it was a gross slap in the face to any person of color that has ever had to risk their lives to protest for their rights. It’s really disgusting to me and it’s bringing me to a point where I feel really discouraged and scared about the future. These things aren’t important to Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Joe Biden has explicitly said that looting and rioting is unacceptable and that he’d give more money to the police. It’s getting tired being Black and having to constantly look around for who can save us because no matter what we do on our own, its never enough against white supremacy. Black people, Latinx people, Indigenous people, queer people, etc. had to vote for their lives. Trump supporters voted so they could continue to see a bigot in the White House that reminds them of themselves. I don’t have any other word to use besides disgusted. Thinking about that makes me feel sick. I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I know that no matter what, marginalized people are going to continue to suffer as the privilege put white supremacy before human lives.
