The passage of time is a unique and slow process that can hit you fast when observing it in other people. In class the other day Dr. Kate mentioned her cat and said “I don’t know how she can get new habits, she’s 16.” That stuck out to me because even with how long we could know people or animals there can always be new things to be discovered or learned. Learning is a never ending process and the way that humans are capable of processing and retaining so much information starting from an early age is crazy to really think about. That is why learning is optional and why learning is sacred to the point where it is seen as a right or privilege that not everyone in the world is capable of having. We collect so much I don’t understand how our brains don’t explode on a daily basis. We do so much observation, collecting, analyzing, etc. that when not everyone wants to commit or learn they are looked down upon or criticized for not using their right. Not everyone wants to learn and that’s okay, not everyone enjoys what they learn and that’s okay too. Learning can be exhausting and strenuous so I hope others are happy and acknowledge their achievements that they made it to the end of the semester. We hit the ground running so fast with so little understanding of the world and are expected to enjoy our later years because we have accumulated so much knowledge that it is now our right to relax. We are taught instructions and rules in school and are molded to become learners that it becomes all we are sometimes. Not just people in college but even people who don’t go to college. Then I wonder what would we be if we didn’t actively try and learn? Are the subliminal messages we encounter daily enough to shape us to become what the world wants us to become? Would we have to hole away in our house with no electronics to form original thoughts or is natural curiosity and an instinct to learn always going to be a part of us?
I think it is human nature to want to learn. I think schools try to encourage that despite a lot of it being to make fresh workers. I think the thoughts you brought up are very interesting. It’s hard to think of not being in an learning environment because I haven’t left school yet. We do collect a lot of information, and that can be a good or bad thing depending on your angle. I think where I am now, it’s bad because I’m so overwhelmed. I think there’s a huge difference between seeking out information versus being forced to learn it for a grade.
Life is all about learning even if it isn’t from school. The choices we make and the lesson we learn from them are also a learning experiences. Everything we do is a form of learning for example watching a show, you’re learning about the characters. Trying out new food items and learning you don’t like them or trying out a makeup look and learning you do like it. Our life is based on the things we continue on learning.
