My discovery of music

Up until my early high school years, I was not really much of a music person, which some people might consider weird. I was at the lowest point of my life during my high school days, I was depressed. I needed a way to relieve my depression. I struggled to find someone I could talk to. I never tried leaning towards my parents because they always expected me to shake away my emotions. I eventually talked to one of my friends and I was recommended music. As I listened to the, I deeply resonated with the lyrics of the song that I shed tears. It was the first time in my life I thought music had meaning to me on a deeper level. It opened up a new realm of music for me. I then decided to get Spotify and explore everything it had to offer. I started customizing my playlist which consists of my favorite songs and even now, it is still getting updated! I immersed myself to different artists and songs and developed a love towards them and their music. I’m glad I was able to find myself and grow to love music as a whole.

Ever since I found a meaning to music in my life, I listened to it more often, especially when I am studying, working out, or when I’m feeling down. Music had certainly impacted my life positively. I started learning to play the piano and guitar. Whenever I want a space of peace and mind, I play the guitar in my room, as it was a place where I can disregard all my negative emotions and thoughts. Sometimes you just need to have your personal space and really detox yourself.

I can’t imagine not being exposed to the vast variety of music. I probably can’t go a day without it now, and that isn’t an exaggeration! It will forever and always remain in a special place in my heart.

  1. I’m extremely happy for you! I know that music that touches ones soul is extremely important, I hope you can continue to find music that will help you throughout your life.

  2. I too took a while to discover the beauty of music. I liked listening to it when my parents had it on the radio, but I just never put it on for myself. During early highschool I developed my own taste, and would listen on the way home from school or to fall asleep to. Slowly music became more and more meaningful to me. Nowadays I listen to music walking around campus, while I am driving, while I am eating, etc.

  3. Hello,
I really liked reading this, I found comfort in your words. Music is so powerful. It makes s feel things we maybe didn’t want to feel but needed to or it can be a source of comfort and keep us company. I’m happy for you, learning an instrument (for me) can be quite the challenge but I also know it can be rewarding and fulfilling. I truly believe that music, instrumental or lyrical, can express things we can’t seem to articulate for some reason or another.

  4. Its crazy to me how music is able to affect us so deeply, I listened to music all my life but like you it wasn’t until I became depressed did I really listened to the lyrics for what they were saying. Even to go as far as to make my own assumption as to what songs say based on my current mood. Its such a personal and healing space that i often take for granted because my brain thinks that i need to suffer alone. I’m glad you found a positive outlet for parts of your greif because I know how hard it can be when so many unhealthy alternatives are always in your face. Music is an art form that everyone can experience and make their own inferences about what they mean and i think its beautiful.

  5. Hello!
I feel the same way about music as you do. Music is so essential to me I cant go a day without it as well. To me its also used as a coping mechanism whenever i’m feeling down and would get me through tedious periods of my life. As a creative and arts person music is an art form that comes in all different sounds and forms just like photography and other types of arts. They all go together hand in hand in that sense. Its a beautiful thing when music has impacted us alike in so many ways.

  6. This is such a beautiful and relatable story! Music truly has the power to heal and uplift our spirits. I’m so glad you found solace in music during your high school days and that it continues to positively impact your life.

My question for you is: Are there any specific genres or artists that you discovered during your exploration of Spotify that have become your favorites?
