The “Normal” category

What does normal mean to you, is it to be like everyone else? Probably not we are our own people and take pride in individuality, but not too much right? Just enough Individuality to be acceptable.

Acceptable by who? Most people? society at large? a small group of trusted friends? the concept of being normal is very vague, yet it plays a large role in our lives in the world as we have made it. Because not being normal is an issue that either must be dealt with or is a tragedy that you must live with, what type of weird you are and how it is perceived usually defines which one you are. The definition of being “normal” also changes with time and place, being gay was seen as the type of weird you have to fix, still is in some places, but in many places it is accepted as a form of “normal” an acceptable deviation from the distribution. being neurodivergent in any way is the tragedy weird, you are different have you noticed? how pitiful your existence must be to live in such a way.

How strange is it that we fixate on this narrow normal when it comes to people. I believe no one fits the description, but many believe they do because theirs is different. but there exists no universal normal, cultures, societies, individuals all believing that their behaviors are the normal behaviors. Others are different and strange, we fixate on the difference ignoring the one fundamental thing we all experience, being human.

Maybe you think me drinking straight from the gallon bottle of milk is weird, and I think the peculiar way you walk is weird. but we both have to wake up in the morning and decide what am I going to do today. I think it would be cool if instead of trying to be normal we could just be human.
