Let me just give you a taste of what has been going on in the sports world this week for those of you who did not know. On Thanksgiving, the NFL was supposed to hold a very pivotal Ravens vs Steelers game at 8:20 pm. However, several (upwards of 20-30) staff and players of the Baltimore Ravens tested positive for COVID-19. This meant that the game clearly could not be held that day. So the league decided to postpone the game to Sunday (when the rest of the games get played). That game… didn’t happen, again because more positive tests came back for the Ravens. The league then decided to push the game back to Tuesday. It does not take a psychic to realize that this game got postponed yet again, but to 24 hours later, on Wednesday.

On October 9th 2020, Netflix released an 8 episode documentary about deaf college students who attended the most prominent deaf college, Gallaudet University in Washington DC. When the documentary was announced earlier in the year, a lot of the deaf community withheld their praise, as the show was being run by Nyle DiMarco, a famous model, actor, insert other things here, who is also deaf. He has a reputation in the deaf community for being… unable to read the room, so to speak. Most people who had heard about the show and who were not deaf or connected to the deaf community in any way were excited to see a show that gives them insight into the lives of deaf people and gives them an opportunity to learn more about deaf culture. I was curious to see what this documentary would be teaching hearing people about “the deaf way.” 

Black people need better representation in film and television. I would say Black people need “more” representation, but lately, the lack of representation has not been the problem, it is the substance. It has largely been on Black struggle, such as slavery, the Civil Rights Movement, racism, and police brutality. How does that affect the mind of a Black child? A Black teen?

Chadwick Boseman. The Black Panther, the King of Wakanda, Jackie Robinson, Thurgood Marshall, James Brown, a family member, a friend, a loved one. Most people knew him as one of his many memorable roles, both fiction and nonfiction, but people who were close to Chadwick knew him as a man of great character, and had nothing but high praise for him. He stole scenes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, MCU, and paid homage to many historically Black figures, but most of us did not know what Chadwick was going through in his everyday life.
