Music Is the Love of My Life

In the third grade, I picked up the violin and learned diligently how to play the instrument and feel in love with it ever since. In high school I learned how to play the piano and that completely changed my perspective on music for such a long time.

Even at the loneliest of times, my music is what keeps me company. In the midst of all my panic attacks, its my playlist that soothes my soul and really calms my nerves. After getting into conflict with my friends, parents, or other people, it’s music that will reset my mind and get my mind back right. On Sunday mornings my praise playlist or the Christian radio is what gets my spirit ready to receive the word of God at church. The only thing that helps keep me focused while I’m studying is my music playing in my ears. At the gym when I’m using all my might to lift up those heavy ass weights, my music is the extra push of adrenaline that helps me successfully complete the workout.

Music is the connecting bridge between me and my family back home. I don’t speak the native language fluently, but when traditional Nigerian music comes on, I can recite every word and joyfully sing along with the rest of my family.

Music is what helps keep me stable. It has helped me find myself and come to be comfortable with who I am as a person. I don’t know who or where I would be without all the music that I listen to.

  1. It took me a while to learn the beauty of music, and I am glad that I came to love music. You mentioned that music is what keeps you company at the loneliest time, and I relate to that heavily. I tend to listen to my playlist whenever I’m alone and it makes me feel a sense of happiness. Music also encourages me when I’m working out, especially the motivation it gives you to give you that extra push for an effective workout.

  2. I also have a strong connection with music. It’s very versatile and can cause so many emotions whether sad, happy, hype, etc. Even creating a playlist can be calming. I also make music and it’s just so nice to sit there and play my guitar. Noticing the intricate small pieces of a song is also very rewarding. I may have a become a bit dependent though so be wary that music can become very addictive.

  3. I used to play trumpet from when I was 9 to 14. I remember learning new music and a month later being able to play without looking at the notes. We usually played quick paced, and strong music with several climaxes. I remember getting goosebumps when the brass section gradually meets the climax of the song and slowly descends. My high school and middle school always got straight ones in the all-county competitions and every year we would go to states. I personally miss those times because I would enjoy the trumpet like very few other people would in my school.

  4. I also play violin so i can relate to what you’re writing about. Music is very powerful and i am glad you were able to experience that feeling of music and the connection to your family!

  5. Learning to play music is so important. It helps with rhythm, patience and finding community. Also with music comes dance, which promotes body awareness and control. Music is a universal language, certain sounds convey different emotions and ideas. It’s so cool to see how positively music has affected you too.

  6. Playing an instrument and learning how to play it helps with so much. I also learned how to play the violin and I fell in love with it so quickly. All types of music is so beautiful and Im glad you get to feel a connection with your family through music as well.

  7. Music is such a beautiful way of expressing artistry and stuff. When I am able to play music, it’s always something that is healing. I have heard that having music in your life increases your quality of life and it keeps you healthy. Having music just makes things so much better.
