Those Who Come After

deepest pit within me

Insides creating a void so hallow

hunger has disappeared

Too weak to stand

My neighbor and I check in

Tap… tap.. Tap

Is he still alive?

Time slips through my empty belly

Hard pulse through the void

Mimicking the tick of a clock

I think about my daughter

Haven’t been able to read the cards she sends

I have to keep going or all of this will be for nothing

The cell starts humming

It’s just my neighbor checking back in

How long has it really been

Flesh feeding on itself

I’m gonna become too thin

I’m not going to make it

Tap… Tap… Tap…

No answer

Hear them remove the body

Guards say im the only one left

I’m stupid for continuing

If I don’t eat now I’ll die

I have already met death in this cage

I sleep in it every night

What will this mean for those who come after me?

  1. I love the story told through this prose. The idea of not allowing injustice to go on, even though it means your end. The want for those who will come after you to never experience what you had to, placing your stone on the house that protects.
