I felt like I needed “Warning: Fat Girl Working Out” on a t-shirt when I started working out at my new gym.I stood outside the gym door going back and forth about whether or not I should go through with my workout plan.  I have always had insecurities about my weight. I was overweight the majority of my life and have dealt with it day by day, but it wasn’t until I studied abroad in the United Kingdom that I really noticed how “big” I was. I had gone back and forth about going to the gym weeks in advance. I was already here so why not walk into the gym, what is the worst that could happen?

Why would I feel bad for fat people?

That was a question told to me in the 6th grade. The children often snickered about my obese teacher. One day in class the children were making “fat jokes” about the teacher and I still remember a girl in my class telling me that fat people make themselves fat, so we shouldn’t feel bad for them. Several days ago I came across a show with a woman crying during an interview. She was crying because she was talking about how people make fun of her for being over weight. I immediately stayed on the channel to learn more about this woman. What I learned in that one hour gave me confidence in myself that I desperately needed.
