The COGIATI is a online test designed to test whether you are trans (or in its terminology “Transsexual”, as it was created in the late 90s) or not. It was designed with the idea that we shouldn’t “just” trust whether people are trans, instead we need to scientifically test whether or not this is the case. It is meant to be a “preliminary” test, not truly scientific, but something to be built upon.
The test is absolutely terrible. There is no scientific validity, and it merely tests adherence to stereotypical gender norms, while also failing to account for neurodiversity. It is written only for typical binary trans femmes and even there it fails.
I first took it when I was 10. I probably took it over a hundred times, possibly over two hundred times. Lets take a look at it now.
The first question is of course absolutely horrid. I am woman who is great at math, and supposedly this makes me less of a woman. This is not the only sexist question of course, if you are good at driving, the test will asssume you are more masculine. If you can catch a ball, you are more masculine. If you cry at movies, you are more feminine. If you liked writing essays as a kid, obviously you are more feminine
Many questions also seem to test essentially how neurotypical you are. This type of question will in general be more difficult for an autistic woman. A test that only works for neurotypical people is a bad test for figuring out if you are trans or not
Many are just bad questions. Like seriously what does a bell ringing have to do with being a woman. And the second question I listed is just terribly written. She makes it ten times more complicated than it has to be and she uses genuinely ambiguous wording. And I genuinely have no idea why being annoyed by a honking car is masculine or feminine
Some questions are also just really weird, and just kinda fucked up. There are some questions about sexual stuff which just doesn’t really actually characterize real life much all that well. And the occasional halfway decent question. Its like 65 questions long so I will spare you the details of every question, but here are my current results.
Unruly Bodies 
I remember when I was younger and I took a bunch of quizzes like this in trying to find out my sexuality. Even then I knew they were very sexist and did not accurately measure one’s sexuality based on the absurd questions they would ask. Also, almost every one time I took one they got my sexuality (the label I now feel most comfortable with) wrong almost every time. It’s insane to look back and see the internet access I was allowed and how they’re probably kids out there now doing the same thing. These quizzes are hurtful and harmful to those who are really lost in confused. I don’t get why they are still up and available for anyone to use.
What does your score of 480 mean? What is “classification five, transsexual”?
It honestly means nothing. In the terminology of the test, this means yeah I should totally go on hormones and transition (which like isn’t wrong, though this test was bs). There were five classification levels which based on your score sort you into 5 categories
-650 to -390: Class 1 (Definite Male)
-389 to -130: Class 2 (Feminine Male)
-129 to 129: Class 3 (Androgyne)
130 to 389: Class 4 (Probable Transsexual)
390 to 650: Class 5 (Classic Transsexual)
It however is completely invalid and the whole medical gatekeeper thing this test implicitly buys into is just bs.
Followed the link and took the quiz, I enjoyed doing it but as an effective form of assistance to someone questioning their gender it’s hilariously bad. In fairness the test is reaching for an impossible goal, I don’t think it could be effective. judging by all of the disclaimers on the first page, the creator also seems to be aware of its effectiveness. What caught me off guard the most is the assumption that the tester is and has been cross dressing (probably because I don’t), but frankly it feels like the whole thing is designed around the assumption of a “correct” answer, and the options are just variations of them.
The whole premise seems flawed. To play devils advocate, sometimes the easiest way to make a tough decision is by being told I’m going to be forced into an option and paying attention to my own reaction. That’s the only way I could see this quiz helping anyone, but the thought that someone who’s questioning themselves would take a quiz like this and take their results as an objective truth is horrible.
I wonder how the writer of the test even conceptualizes womanhood. Not that “woman” as a category is even possible to define, but this is just a jumble of stereotypes and pseudoscience? It reminds me of intelligence tests that just consist of patterns of different symbols that have no actual meaning. What are they even measuring?
Oh that quiz is Bad bad. I’m so sorry you found this as a 10 year old, I can’t imagine how harmful that must have been. I found another one on the internet that was less transfemme focused called S.A.G.E. (Sex and Gender Explorer) that has 160 questions and is…just as weird.
Two kinds of questions that stood out:
Questions asking about specific physical measurements – waist “circumfrance” divided by hips, height, distance from your brow line to your hair line, foot length, migraine frequency
Questions asking how you feel about stereotypically gendered activities, like housework, car maintenance, and carpentry, but they all had one answer option that was “arousing.” Other questions with this option asked about a tampon commercial, an article about breastfeeding, and a dream where you’re pregnant. Maybe this is related to the whole autogynephilic thing??
There was also a question asking your favorite kind of monkey, where none of the answer choices were actual monkey types.
